Despite some playful posts about the matches; I really hate FIFA and the world cup. More than anything I hate ruthless fanaticism and what it does to the people in my country; it suspends their logical thinking for a while. Leading to sometimes even

Now, which country with questionable human rights records wanting to gain international recognition will they go to next? Oh Qatar!

When I worked the ramp at LAX they had to institute a rule that said that on days when Mexico was playing in the World Cup you couldn’t call off unless you returned with a doctor’s note or were dead - those were the only two acceptable reasons for not coming in . It didn’t really work, but at least it scared some of the newbies into actually showing up for work as scheduled.

Can confirm that Qatar is a mess. Even the workers that the US employs out there live in ridiculous conditions that shouldn't be allowed. Also the alcohol thing is going to be a problem, people like beer.

Well, I can’t imagine gay rights will be an issue in Qatar as it was in Russia, it will probably be worse, and if anything I think fans will like to take a bit more activism in the country’s politics.

I forgot my car was on a metered zone and overstayed 45 minutes, but since the police officers were watching the Mexico Brazil game, they did not care.

Well the probability of Qatar is somewhat high. US would be one of the front runners for emergency replacement country given it’s existing infrastructure (as shitty as it may be) .

Homophobia is a serious issue in Russia but homosexuality is a criminal offense in Qatar, punished by up to 7 years in jail. The Gulf countries proposed in 2013 to straight up ban any gay foreigners to enter their countries, but that proposal was dropped
